Jesus, speaking to the men coming to arrest Him: “When I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour and the power of darkness.” (Lu 22;53)
What exactly was Jesus saying of these crafty, evil men? Envious of Jesus’ popularity with the common people, the religious leaders of His day trumped up charges against Him in a move to eliminate Him and His influence. Jesus’ message of freedom in God’s Truth did not support the agenda of these nefarious men to keep the populace trapped, groveling, and fearful.
I almost seems that Jesus is accusing them of playing a part in an old play, showcasing their time on the world stage in this drama between Ultimate Good and destructive evil. Were these men slated to play this part and that time? And “power of darkness” implies that they were under the direction of the deeply disturbing one, the father of lies. These arresting officers were submitting to a destructive plan and performing the betrayal to end all betrayals. “He came unto His own, Na His own received Him not.”
May we always plan to run fast and far away from evil schemes. Let’s prepare our hearts to stand in the evil day…STAND.
